When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, "I used everything you gave me."  ~Erma Bombeck

Welcome to Mt. Elgon Self-Help Community Project Website

Mt. Elgon Self-Help Community Project is a Non-Profit Community Based Organization working with Children, Youth, Women, Men, Families and Communities in Uganda.

We work with families, faith-based and grass root initiatives to serve the disadvantaged individuals and groups of people such as orphans and vulnerable Children, Youth and Women. The project holds at its heart the well-being of people, especially those made vulnerable by effects of poverty, conflict and disease.

We envision a community where all people have equal access to quality care and support, and to keep their hopes and aspirations unclouded

Mission: To improve the quality of life of rural people affected by poverty, disasters, conflict and disease by working in and with individuals, families and communities to enhance care and support through capacity building, income generation, self-help groups and using our resources in ways that benefit people and environment.

Here in Mt Elgon in Uganda, there has been increasing concern that the traditional social support structures will be overwhelmed. Economic, social and environmental crises are key concerns.

The problems of poverty, conflict and disease combine to threaten the stability of families and communities. When you move around the villages, the predominant stories are usually around how the world has changed, how things are not easy now, families are becoming increasingly difficult to sustain. There are increased cases of divorce and separation and conflict within families. The conversations around these issues give birth to anger, frustration, vulnerability, neglect, anguish, stigma and discrimination. People are also facing depression, conflict and envy. And children are at risk of abandonment.

To us, theses are clouds that encircle our communities and we must find ways to raise our heads above these clouds to where Hope, Joy, Peace and Comfort lie. Our major concern is how we can get ordinary people brought together to paint the future in the colors they would wish to see and to rejuvenate their hopes, dreams and aspirations.

We do not tell people what to do, but through our interactions, teachings, and experience sharing, we create the supportive and therapeutic environment in which individuals are invited to define the purpose of their existence. We inspire and motivate people to see predicaments as opportunities for creativity and view the environment through the eyes of their purpose of existence. This approach has helped to ignite hidden potentials and aided the development of alternative and preferred stories that awakens individuals’ sense self-worth, appreciation and value for life. This approach enables people to journey to the future with confidence and optimism while remaining connected to their hopes, values, skills, beliefs and ambitions that they hold precious.

Our success as individuals, families and communities in the face of adversity is influenced by our wisdom in knowing what we do, and our readiness and willingness to learn from history. We draw energy from our relationships of mutual benefit, our values and our resilience in the face of shifting realities. This idea of “Collective Intelligence” and wise responsiveness has paved the way for the rich territory of identity, collaboration, participation and learning.

We are building a system where ordinary people are brought together to paint the world in the colors that they would wish to see. We are consciously directing our energies and resources into initiatives that enable our potentials to be reached and tapping into people’s existing passion to make a difference.
Each time that we have raised our heads above the clouds (predicaments), incredible things have happened. Here are some of our accomplishments.

Buy the solar system from us. We are producing solar panels from 1 watt to 100 watts with the aim of generating local income to support the work of the organisation. Email us here for the price list.
